The racing public will decide which of three G1 Derby winners will join the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame. Voting is now open to select from Shergar (GB) (Great Nephew), Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), and will close at midnight on Sunday May 22.
Successful in the Derby in 1981, Shergar also landed the Irish equivalent and the G1 King Geroge VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. but was later kidnapped after a brief stint at stud. Former Coolmore kingpin Galileo added his name to the annals of the Blue Riband in 2001, and he too scored in the Irish Derby and King George. However, he made an even greater mark as a stallion and holds the world record for total black-type winners with 350. Galileo's younger half-brother, Sea The Stars strolled to a Derby victory in 2009 after taking the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas. The imposing bay also captured the G1 Coral-Eclipse S., the G1 Juddmonte International, the G1 Irish Champion S. and his grande finale-the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He too, is making an impact as a stallion.
Alan Byrne, a member of the Hall of Fame panel and editor-in-chief of the Racing Post, said, “In their different ways, these three champions have written their names indelibly in racing history.
“It is easy to make a compelling case for each of them to enter the Hall of Fame. It will be fascinating to see what verdict the wisdom of the racing public will produce.”
